In the beginning, there was Eru, the One, who in the Elven tongue is called Ilúvatar.  Ilúvatar created the Ainur, who joined their voices in song and sounded the world into existence.  This story is told in the Ainulindalë.  A bunch of things happened.  These stories are told in the Valaquenta and the Quenta Silmarillion.  This was the First Age of the World.  A bunch more things happened.  This was the Second Age of the World.  A bunch more things happened.  This was the Third Age of the World, which concluded with the War of the Ring and the defeat of Sauron, the Enemy.  Thus began the Fourth Age of the World, the Age of Men.
